the jam-maker artist

To be ‘jam-maker artist’ means to (take a) stand in a space and a time. It is to affirm that artist and jam-maker are part of the same capitalist system, that creation is an economic activity like any other and that the artist is a worker. It is to lay a subjective and engaged glance on a consciously chosen subject. I practiced the activity of jam maker artist from 2020 to 2022, a period during which I tried to understand and tell the local economy of jam in Limousin (France) by meeting its actors/ producers and by myself the profession of jam maker. I have designed and experienced this piece as a long term performance in which I worked as a jam-maker while archiving, analysing and keeping an acute artist gaze on my activities and the environment in which I practiced them. This work pushes the ideas of conceptual stance and aware behaviour to the extreme, interrogating the notion of 1:1 scale art.

The publication L’artiste confiturier was acquired by the artist’s book collection of the Geneva Museum of Art and History (MAH) in August 2022. The work was exhibited during Impressions Mutantes festival (Nantes, FR. September 2022).
